Overview / Get Involved / Public Realm / Community Reference Group

What is Public Realm?

Public realm is the space around, between and within buildings that are publicly accessible, including streets, squares, parks and open spaces. These areas and settings support or facilitate public life and social interaction.

Draft Public Realm Vision and Key Themes

The Vision and Key Themes which have emerged through the community feedback and will guide the design of the public realm are summarised below.

The Vision is:

Inclusive, all-seasons, coastal amenity for locals and visitors, providing connections to the surrounding environment and the unique character of the local area.

The Key Themes are:

  • Relaxed Vibe - An informal, casual and welcoming feel to the public realm.
  • Natural Coastal Landscape- Integrate the coastal dune landscape into the marina through planting and use of materials.
  • Flow and Connection to the Broader Coast - Enhance North-South connections along the beaches, Iluka to the North and Mullaloo to the South.
  • Recreational Opportunities - Enhance accessibility and opportunities for coastal recreation activities on the site, such as fishing, surfing, beaching and boating.
  • Iconic and Recognisable - Create unique spaces that are recognisable to Ocean Reef Marina. This may be one big attractor or several attractors spread across the site.
  • Inclusive and Safe- Create a place that is welcoming, safe and accessible for all people and abilities, across all seasons and throughout the day and night.

Draft Public Realm Objectives

The following Draft Objectives have been developed to make sure the design reflects the Vision. We will continuously reference the Vision and Objectives to ensure we deliver a space that meets community expectations. Find out more about what each Objective means.
