What You Told Us

Over the past 12 months, we've been working closely with the community to develop a draft vision for Subi East.

Your input has helped shape the Vision Concept. This early plan identifies key to be further investigated over the coming months.

The main themes that have emerged through community feedback are:

1. Design quality is key

  • To investigate a mixture of housing types to accommodate density across the site.
  • The design of the buildings is important and we should accommodate 'density with sensitivity'.

2. Public spaces are crucial

  • To make it green and to cater for a range of activities. You asked us to investigate native plantings and to provide green leafy streets that create a place that is friendly for people and wildlife.
  • To retain the oval and ensure it provides a wide variety of uses for the whole community.

3. Create a place that is activated both day and night

  • To make the area inclusive and safe for families in the evening with activities, events and affordable food and beverage choices.
  • The area should investigate learning centres, aged care, recreation facilities and indoor meeting spaces. You asked us to preference locally owned and operated rather than ‘chains’.

4. Make pedestrians the priority

  • To focus on the experience of people. Your comments centred around safety, creating resting points (and quiet spaces), making the site easy to move through, and creating a green leafy experience with shade and strong cycling linkages.

5. Honour the site's histories, memories and stories

  • You wanted the various histories of the site reflected through the area. You asked us to ensure that any new development reflects a strong connection to its history – both aboriginal and non-aboriginal. You told us this could be investigated through public art, the naming of elements and through signage.

6. The development should integrate with surrounding neighbourhoods

  • To provide strong connections to surrounding neighbourhoods especially Rokeby Road and West Leederville.
  • Any new development should complement, but not compete, with local businesses.
